THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Venezia Shirt Designed as a Tribute to One of Italy’s Great Architects

Venezia could easily have made another fashionable black kit and left it there. Instead, the club built the 2023/24 home shirt around Carlo Scarpa, one of Venice’s most celebrated modern architects, during the year of the city’s 18th Architecture Biennale. The launch campaign was even photographed inside the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, spaces Scarpa himself redesigned in the 1960s.

The tiny details are where the reference really lives. Venezia said the gold collar trim and gold branding were inspired by Scarpa’s own use of gold to enrich clean architectural forms, while “Città di Venezia” was moved to the side of the shirt for the first time. The orange-and-green centre stripe was then used to symbolise the club’s supporters from both Venice’s islands and the mainland.

And the shirt ended up attached to a huge season on the pitch too. Venezia reached the Serie B play-off final and beat Cremonese 1-0 at the Penzo, earning promotion back to Serie A after two seasons away. So a shirt designed around Venice’s architecture finished its life celebrating Venezia’s return to the top flight.
