Turkey made their European Championship debut at Euro 1996, 72 years after the national team's first international match in 1923. It was a big moment for a country that had only played at one major tournament before, the 1954 World Cup. Their first Euros didn't go as planned: three defeats, no goals and an early exit. But that team opened the door for a new period in Turkish football, which would eventually lead to a World Cup semi-final in 2002.

Turkey Waited 72 Years to Play at Their First European Championship

In 1996, Turkey travelled to England to play in their first-ever European Championship. They hadn't appeared at a major international tournament since the 1954 World Cup, so qualifying was already a big achievement. Their squad, managed by Fatih Terim, included players such as Hakan Şükür, Arif Erdem and Rüştü Reçber, who would become important names in Turkish football.

Turkey's first match was against Croatia at the City Ground in Nottingham on 11 June 1996. The game was still 0-0 with only minutes left, but Goran Vlaović scored in the 86th minute to give Croatia a 1-0 win. Turkey then lost 1-0 to Portugal and 3-0 to Denmark, finishing bottom of their group without scoring a goal.

Despite the results, Euro 1996 was an important starting point. Turkey returned to the European Championship in 2000, reached the quarter-finals and finished third at the 2002 World Cup. The red Adidas shirt, with its bold white shoulder stripes and central Turkish flag, comes from the beginning of that journey. It's also a great example of the colourful Adidas designs that made 1990s football shirts so different from today's.
