Modrić Broke His Leg Then Scored on His First Start Back

Just four league games into 2009/10, Luka Modrić’s season looked like it might be over before it had really started. He fractured his right fibula during Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Birmingham City on 29 August, cutting short a brilliant opening run in which Spurs had won their first four Premier League matches.

Modrić finally returned against Wolves in December after roughly three months out. Then came the perfect comeback: in his first start since the injury, against West Ham on 28 December, he needed only 11 minutes to score the opening goal in a 2-0 Tottenham win.

He went on to wear this navy No. 14 away design during the second half of the campaign, including Tottenham’s 2-1 victory at Stoke in March. By May, Spurs had secured fourth place and Champions League qualification, turning a season that began with Modrić on crutches into one of the defining campaigns of Tottenham’s modern era.
