SPAL started the 1994/95 season brilliantly, winning their first six league matches and going 11 games unbeaten. For a time, they looked like serious promotion favourites. 

The season was suddenly overshadowed by tragedy when 21-year-old Giuseppe Campione died in a car accident in September. Four days later, SPAL faced Spezia wearing black armbands and won 5-1. 

Mino Bizzarri scored four of the five goals, a SPAL feat that was still described as unmatched years later. He finished the season with 21 goals, making him the standout player of the campaign.
