Spain’s 2018 home shirt revived the famous diamond graphic of the national team’s 1994 World Cup kit, redesigned by Adidas in red, yellow and blue. For Andrés Iniesta, however, the design became connected to the end of an era: his final Spain appearance came in the 2018 World Cup defeat to Russia. He came on in the 67th minute wearing No.6 and scored Spain’s first penalty in the shootout, but Russia advanced 4-3. Immediately afterwards, Iniesta confirmed that his 131st appearance would be his last for the national team.

The Last Shirt Iniesta Wore for Spain

Adidas unveiled this Spain shirt before the 2018 World Cup as a deliberate return to the past. The red, yellow and blue diamond graphic running down one side was inspired by the national team’s memorable 1994 World Cup shirt, while the Adidas logo was moved back to the centre of the chest in another reference to that design.

For Andrés Iniesta, the shirt represented the final chapter of an international career that had defined Spain’s greatest era. He still wore his familiar No.6 at the 2018 World Cup, appearing throughout the group stage before Spain met hosts Russia in the round of 16.

Iniesta surprisingly began the Russia match on the bench. He entered after 67 minutes, nearly scored during normal time and then stepped up to take Spain’s first penalty in the shootout, converting it. Russia eventually won the shootout 4-3 after saves from Igor Akinfeev ended Spain’s tournament.

After the match, Iniesta announced that his international career was over. His final record stood at 131 Spain appearances, having been part of the teams that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
