Spain were fighting for a place at the 1994 World Cup when their goalkeeper was sent off after just ten minutes against Denmark. On 17 November 1993, Andoni Zubizarreta received a red card, forcing 23-year-old Santiago Cañizares to make his international debut without even warming up. Despite playing almost the entire match with ten men, Spain won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Fernando Hierro. The victory sent Spain to the World Cup and knocked out Denmark, who had won Euro 1992 just a year earlier.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Spain's Goalkeeper Was Sent Off After 10 Minutes, They Still Qualified for the World Cup

On 17 November 1993, Spain faced Denmark in Seville in their final World Cup qualifier. Denmark were the reigning European champions and Spain needed a victory to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. But after just ten minutes, goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta made a terrible mistake. His clearance went straight to Michael Laudrup and when he tried to stop the attack, he brought Laudrup down outside the penalty area. The referee showed him a red card.

With Spain down to ten men, manager Javier Clemente had to bring on 23-year-old Santiago Cañizares, who had never played for the senior national team. He didn't even have time to warm up properly. Denmark pushed for a goal, but Cañizares kept them out. Then, in the 63rd minute, Fernando Hierro scored from a corner after Peter Schmeichel failed to collect the ball. Spain were suddenly 1-0 ahead.

Spain held on to win, qualifying for the World Cup and eliminating Denmark. For Cañizares, it was an unforgettable international debut, while Hierro's goal became one of the most important of Spain's qualifying campaign. The red-and-yellow Adidas home shirt was worn during this period, just before the national team introduced a new design for the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
