In 1998/99, Sevilla were fighting their way out of the second division, eventually beating Villarreal 3–0 on aggregate in the promotion playoff with Monchi in goal for the decisive second leg. This Umbro anthem jacket comes from that exact season, when Sevilla finally returned to La Liga.

The Jacket From Monchi’s Last Promotion as a Goalkeeper

Before Monchi became famous for building Sevilla teams, he was standing in their goal during one of the club’s most important promotions.

The 1998/99 season had not started brilliantly. Sevilla were in the second division and Marcos Alonso took over as manager in January with the team around mid-table. Under him, they produced a strong second half of the season and earned a place in the promotion playoff against Villarreal.

The first leg changed everything. In Villarreal, Greek midfielder Vasilis Tsartas scored twice as Sevilla won 2–0.

Three days later, almost 48,000 people packed the Sánchez-Pizjuán for the return. Monchi started in goal, Quevedo scored the only goal and Sevilla won 1–0 to complete a 3–0 aggregate victory and return to La Liga.

This red, white and navy Umbro piece is officially catalogued as Sevilla’s 1998/99 Anthem jacket, separate from their other training and trackwear from the campaign.

That gives it a very specific place in Sevilla history: the season before Monchi stopped being known as a goalkeeper and eventually became one of football’s most famous sporting directors.
