Nakamura Scored His First Serie A Goal in the 92nd Minute, Inter Won in the 93rd

Shunsuke Nakamura arrived at Reggina in summer 2002 at 24, shortly after the disappointment of being left out of Japan’s World Cup squad. Reggina had just returned to Serie A and the move made him only the fourth Japanese player to sign for an Italian club at the time.

His first Serie A goal produced one of the stranger endings of the season. Against Inter on 22 September 2002, Christian Vieri had put Inter ahead, but Nakamura converted a penalty in the 92nd minute to level the match. Before Reggina could even settle for the draw, Álvaro Recoba scored in the 93rd to make it 2-1 to Inter.

Nakamura ended his first Italian campaign with 7 league goals and 5 assists in 31 appearances, finishing joint-top of Reggina’s Serie A scoring chart as the club survived via a relegation play-off. That makes this No. 10 especially good: it’s from the season Nakamura first arrived in Europe, immediately became one of Reggina’s key players and started building the reputation that would later make him a cult favourite across European football.
