Real Sociedad 2000/01 Home (2XL)

Real Sociedad spent much of the 2000/01 season fighting relegation. Javier Clemente was replaced by Periko Alonso, who was then succeeded by John Toshack. Despite the changes, the club remained in trouble near the bottom of La Liga. With just two matches remaining, Sociedad travelled to San Mamés to face Athletic Club in one of Spanish football's biggest rivalries. 

On 10 June 2001, Jankauskas opened the scoring in the 29th minute and Javi de Pedro made it 2-0 ten minutes later. Athletic fought back through Ismael Urzaiz in the 72nd minute, putting Sociedad under pressure. But Iñigo Idiakez scored a penalty in the 86th minute to seal a 3-1 victory. The result confirmed Real Sociedad's survival in La Liga with one match still to play. 

The victory was especially satisfying because Sociedad had lost the reverse derby 2-0 at Anoeta earlier that season. Instead of facing another year in the second division, they celebrated staying up at their rivals' stadium. The club would survive another difficult campaign in 2001/02 before making an unexpected challenge for the La Liga title in 2002/03. This blue-and-white Astore shirt comes from the two seasons immediately before that turnaround.
