Real Madrid Won Their Ninth European Cup After Zidane Scored One of Football's Most Famous Goals

Real Madrid turned 100 in 2002 and the club wanted to celebrate with a major trophy. With players like Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, Raúl and Roberto Carlos, expectations were high. They reached the Champions League final after knocking out Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and Barcelona in the semi-finals.

On 15 May 2002, Madrid faced Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Raúl opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but Lúcio equalised just five minutes later. Then, just before half-time, Roberto Carlos sent a high cross towards Zidane. The French midfielder hit it first time with his left foot, sending the ball into the top corner.

There was still plenty of work to do. Goalkeeper César Sánchez was injured in the second half, bringing a young Iker Casillas onto the pitch. Casillas made several important saves in the final minutes to keep Madrid ahead. The 2-1 win gave the club its ninth European Cup, exactly 100 years after its founding. More than 75,000 supporters later filled the Bernabéu to celebrate the victory with the team.
