The Black-and-Yellow Design Was a Throwback to Madrid’s 2000 Champions League Final

When adidas designed Real Madrid’s 2023/24 third shirt, the black colour wasn’t chosen randomly. The brand said it wanted the kit to celebrate Madrid’s history of big European nights, specifically pointing back to the black shirt worn in the 2000 Champions League final.

That night in Paris, Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 to win their eighth European Cup. The black kit from that final became one of those Madrid shirts that instantly brings back a specific European moment, so adidas reused the same basic idea here: black as the main colour, with bright yellow picked from the crown in the club crest.

And the timing worked pretty well too. Madrid ended the 2023/24 season by winning their 15th European Cup. So this shirt connects two different Champions League eras in a pretty neat way: its design looks back to 2000, while the season itself ended with Madrid becoming European champions again.
