Most clubs change colours completely for an away kit. Betis went the opposite way in 2016/17: Adidas simply took their famous green and made it much darker, removing the stripes and turning the club crest completely white. Even the hidden details stayed focused on the club, with stylised Real Betis Balompié initials placed on the upper back.

The Betis Away Shirt That Refused to Stop Being Green

Real Betis are so closely linked with green that even their 2016/17 away shirt refused to abandon it.

Instead of choosing a completely different colour, Adidas removed the famous green-and-white stripes and created a much darker green kit. Lime-green Adidas stripes ran down the sides, white and bright-green details surrounded the collar and cuffs and even the normal multicoloured Betis badge was replaced by a monochrome white crest.

The design used Adidas’ widely used Condivo 16 template, but Betis added a small club-specific detail on the back: stylised initials representing Real Betis Balompié beneath the collar.

Another thing that immediately dates this shirt is what is missing. When Betis presented their three kits in July 2016, none carried a main commercial sponsor across the chest, leaving the front unusually clean.

The season itself was difficult. Betis finished 15th in La Liga, with Rubén Castro again leading the scoring with 13 league goals.

But as a design, it is very Betis: even when Adidas was supposed to create an alternative colour, they basically said, “fine… darker green.”
