Mallorca came unbelievably close to Champions League football in 2009/10. They won their final game 2–0 and briefly had fourth place, but Sevilla scored a 94th-minute winner against Almería to take the last Champions League spot instead. This black-and-red third design was used during that remarkable Mallorca season and the story got even stranger when UEFA later blocked the club from entering the Europa League they had qualified for.

The Shirt From Mallorca’s 94th-Minute Champions League Heartbreak

Mallorca’s 2009/10 season had one of the cruellest endings imaginable.

Going into the final day, Gregorio Manzano’s team were fighting Sevilla for the final Champions League place. Mallorca did their job, beating Espanyol 2–0 with goals from Víctor Casadesús and Mario Suárez.

Meanwhile, Sevilla were drawing 2–2 away at Almería. At that point, Mallorca were heading for fourth place.

Then, in the 94th minute, young Sevilla striker Rodri scored. Sevilla won 3–2 and took the Champions League position, leaving Mallorca fifth by a single point. UEFA described the goal as the strike that “ended RCD Mallorca’s dreams of finishing fourth.”

Fifth place still meant Europa League qualification or so Mallorca thought.

Two months later, UEFA ruled that the club did not meet the admission requirements because of problems with its licence and financial obligations. Mallorca were removed from European competition altogether.

This black Real Mallorca third shirt was part of the club’s range across 2008/09 and 2009/10, with its red angular piping and unusual double-badge chest layout.

So this design comes from a period when Mallorca went from being seconds away from the Champions League to being denied Europe completely, all within a couple of months.
