The Netherlands wore this white Nike away design in one of the craziest matches in World Cup history. On 25 June 2006, they faced Portugal in a match that became known as the Battle of Nuremberg. The referee showed 16 yellow cards and sent off four players, two from each team. Portugal won 1-0, but the match is still remembered for everything that happened beyond the score.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt From a World Cup Match With Four Red Cards and 16 Yellows

On 25 June 2006, the Netherlands faced Portugal in the World Cup round of 16. It was the first time the Dutch wore their new white away shirt at the tournament. Nike had based its red, white and blue diagonal stripes on the shirt worn in the Netherlands' first international match against Belgium in 1905.

What followed was anything but a normal football match. Portugal took the lead through Maniche in the 23rd minute, but the biggest story was the number of cards. The referee showed 16 yellows and four reds, sending off Costinha, Deco, Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst. By the end, both teams had only nine players left.

Portugal held on to win 1-0, knocking the Netherlands out of the World Cup. The game became known as the Battle of Nuremberg and remains one of the most talked-about matches in tournament history. It also gave this white Nike shirt a memorable place in Dutch football history: a design inspired by the country's very first international match, worn during one of its most chaotic World Cup games.
