The Blue Shirt That Sent Oranje Through

Nike gave the Netherlands a very different away look for the 2000/02 period: bright blue across the body, dark grey sleeves and side panels and small orange details on the collar, Swoosh and KNVB crest. The design became part of Euro 2000, which the Netherlands co-hosted with Belgium.

Its clearest tournament moment came against Denmark on 16 June 2000. The Dutch wore this exact blue away design in Rotterdam and, after a goalless first half, Patrick Kluivert opened the scoring shortly before the hour. Substitute Ronald de Boer added the second nine minutes later before Boudewijn Zenden completed a 3-0 victory.

The result was more important than just another group win: it sent the Netherlands into the Euro 2000 quarter-finals with one match still to play. UEFA described it as the performance that finally got the co-hosts moving after criticism of their narrow opening victory over the Czech Republic.

The Dutch would eventually reach the semi-finals, but this blue shirt has its own specific Euro story rather than simply borrowing moments from the orange kit. It was the change strip worn on the night Kluivert, De Boer and Zenden put three past Denmark and confirmed Oranje's place in the knockout rounds.
