Few shirt designs capture a changing of the guard as neatly as this one. David Beckham wore United’s No.7 in the same Nike home design during 2002/03; after his departure, 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo arrived from Sporting and was handed the famous number by Sir Alex Ferguson, despite Ronaldo initially wanting No.28. Four days after signing, Ronaldo came off the bench against Bolton in this red shirt and transformed a 1-0 game into a 4-0 win, beginning one of Manchester United’s most famous No.7 careers.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt That Passed No.7 from Beckham to Ronaldo

This Nike home design lasted two seasons and the identity of the No.7 on its back changed dramatically between them. In 2002/03 it belonged to David Beckham; by the following August Beckham had left for Real Madrid and Manchester United had signed an 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting.

Ronaldo did not actually expect to inherit Beckham’s number. He later explained that he had asked for No.28, the number he wore at Sporting, but Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he take United’s No.7, previously worn by figures including George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Beckham.

His United debut came against Bolton Wanderers on 16 August 2003. Ronaldo entered with around half an hour remaining and United only 1-0 ahead. His pace and stepovers immediately changed the match, with United scoring three more to win 4-0; the Premier League describes him as playing a part in three of the goals, while Ferguson called it a “marvellous debut.”

Less than three months later, Ronaldo scored his first Manchester United goal in the same home design, driving a free-kick past Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. That makes this Ronaldo 7 version more than just an early-career shirt: it is the design that physically links Beckham’s final United season to the beginning of Ronaldo’s first.
