In 2012, Manchester City brought back a colour they had worn in two FA Cup-winning seasons: maroon. The club had worn maroon shirts when they won the competition in 1934 and 1956, both times with Umbro as their manufacturer. For their final season together, Umbro created a new maroon away shirt with gold details and thin vertical stripes. Former Oasis guitarist and lifelong City fan Noel Gallagher helped launch the collection alongside captain Vincent Kompany.

Manchester City Brought Back Their 1956 FA Cup Colours for Umbro's Final Season

Manchester City's 2012/13 away shirt was inspired by two important moments in the club's history. In 1934, City beat Portsmouth 2-1 to win the FA Cup. Twenty-two years later, they won it again with a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City. Both teams had worn maroon shirts made by Umbro, giving the colour a special place in City's history.

When Umbro designed the 2012/13 away shirt, they decided to bring that colour back. The new design featured thin vertical stripes, a traditional V-neck and gold details. The club also invited Noel Gallagher, a lifelong City supporter, to help launch the shirts alongside Vincent Kompany. Umbro even asked supporters to submit their own ideas for the launch campaign.

There was another reason the shirt was special. After years of working together, Manchester City and Umbro were about to part ways, with Nike taking over in 2013. The 2012/13 collection became Umbro's final contribution to the club before that change. It brought together the team's past and present, celebrating two FA Cup victories while marking the end of an important partnership.
