The Shirt Coutinho Wore to Chip De Gea and Knock United Out of Europe

The setting alone made this shirt part of something new. Liverpool and Manchester United had already played nearly 200 competitive matches, yet their 2016 Europa League tie was the first time the two rivals had ever met in UEFA competition. Liverpool won the first leg 2-0, but at Old Trafford Anthony Martial’s penalty suddenly made the comeback feel possible.

Then Coutinho produced one of those goals that makes no sense until you watch it back. He burst past Guillermo Varela down the left, drove almost to the goal line and, instead of crossing, dinked the ball over David de Gea from the tightest of angles. Jürgen Klopp called it a “genius moment” and the goal effectively killed United’s comeback as Liverpool advanced 3-1 on aggregate.

The goal became so closely associated with Coutinho that Liverpool later ranked it No. 1 among his best goals for the club. So this Coutinho 10 is the design he wore for one of the defining moments of his entire Anfield career, against Liverpool’s biggest rivals, in their first-ever European showdown.
