The Other Shirt from Chiesa’s Breakout Summer

Federico Chiesa entered Euro 2020 as one of Italy’s exciting younger players and left it as one of the faces of the tournament.

He began the competition outside the starting eleven but gradually became impossible to leave out. Chiesa scored against Austria in the round of 16, struck again against Spain in the semi-final and was later selected in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament as Italy won the European Championship.

Those famous goals were scored in Italy’s blue home shirt, so this white version should not be falsely connected to either moment. Its appeal is different.

This was Italy’s official away design from the same championship-winning period and the team wore white in the tournament opener against Turkey. Chiesa came on during the second half as Italy began the campaign with a 3–0 victory in Rome. UEFA later explained that Italy wore white in that match to create clearer colour contrast with Turkey’s red kit.

The number 14 also matters. It became closely linked to Chiesa during the summer when he went from talented squad player to national-team hero.
