Mourinho’s First Inter Shirt

Inter’s 2008/09 home shirt arrived at the beginning of a major new chapter.

José Mourinho had just taken over as manager after winning league titles in Portugal and England. He did not need a settling-in season. Inter moved to the top of Serie A early in the campaign and stayed there, eventually winning the club’s fourth consecutive league title. 

The shirt itself quietly shows how dominant Inter already were. Above the crest sits the gold star earned for ten Italian championships, while the Scudetto shield marks them as the reigning champions. Nike also added gold details to the Pirelli sponsor, cuffs and lower hem, giving the traditional blue-and-black stripes a much richer look. 

The number 2 was worn that season by Iván Córdoba, one of Inter’s longest-serving defenders and a vice-captain of the team. He made 28 league appearances during the title-winning campaign and was part of the group that won five consecutive Scudetti between 2006 and 2010.
