THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Sponsorless Shirt from Firmino’s First Full Season

This black Puma shirt was Hoffenheim’s third option during 2011–12, but it was not an entirely new release. The design was carried over from the previous collection, giving it a longer life than most modern third kits.

The version normally associated with the team carried the Suntech sponsor. This example has a completely clean front, making it a less common sponsorless retail variation rather than the exact match configuration.

The season was also Roberto Firmino’s first full campaign in Germany. He was still only 20 and far from the player Liverpool fans would later know, but he made 33 appearances across the league and cup and began establishing himself in European football.

Hoffenheim unusually had four outfield designs available that season, so even within the collection this black third shirt sat behind several alternatives.

The clean chest is what really makes this one. It already comes from the beginning of Firmino’s European story, but without the sponsor, the black-and-gold Puma design looks sharper and far less like the Hoffenheim shirts most people remember.
