THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Goal That Sent Germany Through

Adidas built Germany’s 2010 home shirt around the idea of teamwork. Eleven thin vertical lines ran down the shirt to represent the eleven players on the pitch, while the central black, red and gold detailing referenced the German flag. A contemporary DFB advert summed up the concept simply: “eleven stripes… eleven players, one team.”

That shirt became the stage for Mesut Özil’s breakthrough World Cup. The 21-year-old wore No.8 and quickly became Germany’s creative hub, but the key moment came after a shock 1-0 defeat to Serbia left Joachim Löw’s side needing a result against Ghana.

After an hour of a tense 0-0 game, Thomas Müller found Özil just outside the penalty area. Özil took one touch and drove the ball into the top corner for the only goal of the match. Germany won 1-0 and finished top of the group, avoiding an early World Cup exit.

Germany then went on to beat England 4-1 and Argentina 4-0 before finishing third. For an Özil #8 shirt, though, the Ghana goal is the most important connection: the exact home design and number he wore when one strike kept Germany’s tournament alive and announced him on the World Cup stage.
