Van Persie Became the Oldest Player Ever to Score Twice in De Klassieker

Van Persie returned to Feyenoord wearing No.32 for a reason: it was the same number he had worn when he first emerged at the club sixteen years earlier. By 2018/19 he was 35, captain and playing the final season of his professional career, basically closing the loop where it had started.

Then came Ajax on 27 January 2019. Feyenoord fell behind, recovered and Van Persie scored on both sides of half-time as their biggest rivals were torn apart 6-2 at De Kuip. At 35 years and 174 days, he became the oldest player ever to score twice in an Eredivisie Klassieker; Feyenoord had not scored six league goals against Ajax since their 9-4 win in 1964.

He ultimately finished his farewell campaign with 16 Eredivisie goals and 18 in all competitions. So this was not just his last Feyenoord shirt, it was the one he wore while giving Ajax one final, extremely Van Persie-shaped goodbye.
