Gavi barely got to wear this shirt before another knee problem stopped his season after just two league appearances. He underwent surgery on his right meniscus in September and disappeared for 205 days, then returned against Sevilla in March to a huge Camp Nou ovation. The detail that makes the comeback even better: Ronald Araújo handed Gavi the captain’s armband the moment he came on.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Gavi Came Back After 205 Days and Was Handed the Captain’s Armband Immediately

Gavi’s 2025/26 season almost disappeared before it had properly begun. After featuring against Mallorca and Levante, discomfort returned in his right knee. In September he underwent arthroscopic surgery for a medial meniscus injury, with the club initially estimating four to five months of recovery.

The wait ultimately stretched to 205 days without a Barcelona appearance. Then, on 15 March 2026 against Sevilla, Gavi finally stood on the touchline again at Spotify Camp Nou. He entered in the 82nd minute with Barça leading comfortably and the stadium gave him the kind of reception usually reserved for a goal.

Then came the perfect little detail. Ronald Araújo immediately passed him the captain’s armband, meaning Gavi returned from more than six months out not simply as another substitute, but as Barça’s captain for the closing minutes of a 5-2 win. For a No. 6 shirt from a season dominated by his recovery, that moment is basically the whole story.
