Pedri arrived at Barcelona as a 17-year-old and somehow became one of the most-used players at the club almost immediately. By 18 years and five months, he had already made 50 first-team appearances, younger than Messi was when he reached the same milestone. He finished his debut season with 52 Barça appearances, more than any other player in the squad, turning this No. 16 into the shirt of one of the fastest breakthroughs the club has ever seen.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Pedri Reached 50 Barça Games Younger Than Messi Did

Pedri’s first Barcelona season got ridiculous very quickly. He arrived from Las Palmas aged 17, was handed No. 16 and within months had gone from promising teenager to someone Ronald Koeman was using constantly. By May, he had reached 50 appearances at just 18 years and five months, making him the second-youngest player in Barça history to do it, behind only Bojan and ahead of Messi, who reached 50 at 19 years and seven months.

He didn’t just rack up substitute appearances either. Pedri finished 2020/21 with 52 official games for Barcelona, the most of anyone in the first-team squad. He was one match away from appearing in all 38 La Liga games, an absurd workload for someone who had started the season as a teenager.

And this domestic version has its own Pedri moment: against Real Betis at Camp Nou, he scored his first La Liga goal for Barcelona, arriving at the back post in the 90th minute to make it 5-2. By the end of the year, the unknown 17-year-old in No. 16 had become a Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy winner, but this shirt is where the whole thing properly started.
