THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Frenkie's First Season at Barcelona

In 2019, Frenkie de Jong was one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe. At just 22, he had helped Ajax reach the Champions League semi-finals, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.

Barcelona had already agreed to sign him in January and he officially arrived that summer. His move was especially exciting for Barça supporters because of his technical ability, passing and confidence on the ball, qualities that suited the club's style of football. De Jong also wanted to keep his #21 shirt from Ajax. Carles Aleñá, who previously wore the number at Barcelona, agreed to switch to #19 so the Dutchman could continue wearing it.

One of Frenkie's first memorable moments came on 14 September 2019 against Valencia. He assisted Ansu Fati's opening goal after just two minutes, before the 16-year-old returned the favour five minutes later, setting up De Jong for his first Barcelona goal. The match ended in a 5-2 victory.

Despite a difficult season for Barcelona, De Jong established himself as a regular starter, making 42 appearances in all competitions during his debut campaign.

This 2019/20 #21 shirt marks the beginning of Frenkie de Jong's Barcelona career, when the young midfielder who had impressed all of Europe with Ajax finally made his move to Camp Nou.
