THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Denis Suárez Scored His First Two-Goal Game for Barça Just Four Days After His First Goal

When Denis Suárez returned to Barcelona in the summer of 2016, he took the number 6 shirt previously worn by Dani Alves. He had spent the previous seasons developing at Sevilla and Villarreal and was now getting another chance at Barça. But despite regular appearances under Luis Enrique, his first goal took several months to arrive.

On 22 January 2017, Denis came on against Eibar after Sergio Busquets was injured. In the 32nd minute, he scored from outside the penalty area to give Barcelona the lead. It was his first competitive goal for the senior team and Barça went on to win 4-0. Denis admitted afterwards that he had been waiting a long time for that moment.

Just four days later, he was back among the goals. Barcelona faced Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals and Denis opened the scoring in the 17th minute. He scored again in the 82nd to complete his first brace for the club as Barcelona won 5-2. After waiting months for his first goal, he had suddenly scored three in five days. Barça eventually went on to win the Copa del Rey that season.
