There is a very Barcelona detail hidden in this kit: Nike designed the shirt’s lettering and number font around the shapes of Antoni Gaudí’s chimney sculptures on La Pedrera. The third kit was created in two shades of green as a modern return to colours Barça had worn in earlier decades. It made its first-team debut in the Champions League at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Barça came from behind to win 2-1.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Barça’s Numbers Were Inspired by Gaudí’s Chimneys

Nike wanted the 2016/17 third kit to feel tied to Barcelona rather than simply being another alternate colour. Even the typography was local: the angular shapes used for the letters and numbers were inspired by the famous rooftop chimneys of Gaudí’s La Pedrera.

The green itself also looked backwards. Barça described the two-tone combination as a modern interpretation of colours the club had worn before, while the fading horizontal lines were designed to create a feeling of speed and movement. Inside the cuffs were the Catalan words “Un Crit” and “Valent”, taken from the Cant del Barça.

The first team debuted the design on 28 September 2016 away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Barça went 1-0 down before Arda Turan and Gerard Piqué turned the Champions League game around for a 2-1 victory, giving the new third kit a comeback win on its very first night.
