Seven Months Before the Treble, Piqué Wasn’t Even Getting on the Pitch

In November 2014, Gerard Piqué’s situation at Barcelona looked surprisingly uncertain. After the 3-1 Clásico defeat to Real Madrid, he didn’t play in the following matches against Celta Vigo and Ajax, while reports claimed Luis Enrique was unhappy with his discipline. The coach publicly denied that the pair had fallen out, but Piqué suddenly looked far from untouchable.

What followed was one of the biggest turnarounds of the season. Piqué forced himself back into the team and became the leader of a defence that conceded only 19 goals in 38 La Liga games. He also scored five league goals (his personal best at the time) and was selected in La Liga’s official 2014/15 Ideal XI. By the end of the campaign, Xavi was saying Piqué had become “the best centre-back in the world again.”

Then came Berlin. Piqué started the Champions League final against Juventus, played the full match and finished the night celebrating Barça’s second treble. So this No. 3 belongs to the season Piqué went from being left out in November to becoming one of the pillars of one of Barcelona’s greatest teams by June.
