Pep Guardiola began 2008/09 as a first-time top-flight manager after being promoted directly from Barça B. The previous season had ended without a trophy, yet within months his team had turned into one of the most dominant sides in Europe.

The Copa del Rey came first, then a famous 6-2 win at Real Madrid effectively put Barça in control of La Liga. When Madrid later lost at Villarreal, Barcelona were confirmed champions for the 19th time.

One trophy remained. In Rome, Barça beat Manchester United 2-0 through Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi to win the Champions League and complete the club’s first treble, also the first ever achieved by a Spanish team.
