On 24 March 1985, Barcelona were minutes away from winning their first La Liga title in 11 years when Valladolid were awarded a late penalty. Barça were leading 2-1, but a draw would have delayed their celebrations. Goalkeeper Urruti saved Mágico González's penalty, securing the title with four matches still to play. The save became so famous that a radio commentator's shout of “Urruti, t'estimo!” is still remembered by Barcelona supporters today.

Barcelona Won Their First League Title in 11 Years Thanks to a Last-Minute Penalty Save

The 1984/85 season started with big changes at Barcelona. Diego Maradona had left for Napoli and English manager Terry Venables had taken charge. Expectations were uncertain, but Barça opened the league campaign with a 3-0 win against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. They stayed top of the table throughout the season, with Bernd Schuster and Steve Archibald playing important roles.

On 24 March 1985, Barcelona travelled to Valladolid knowing a victory would secure the championship. They were leading 2-1 when Valladolid received a penalty in the closing minutes. Mágico González stepped up, but goalkeeper Urruti dived to his right and saved it. Barcelona held on, winning their first La Liga title since 1974.

A week later, the club organised a celebration at Camp Nou, bringing together representatives from its previous league-winning teams. Barcelona then beat Sporting Gijón 2-0 in front of their supporters. The title ended an eleven-year wait and became one of the biggest moments of Barcelona's Meyba era, the period associated with this blue-and-red tracksuit jacket.
