The Shirt from Dortmund’s Back-to-Back Title

Borussia Dortmund entered 1995/96 with a new kind of pressure. They had just won their first Bundesliga title of the modern era, but still had to prove they could stay ahead of Bayern Munich rather than simply enjoy one perfect season.

They answered by winning the league again.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side finished six points ahead of Bayern, giving Dortmund consecutive Bundesliga titles for the first time in the club’s history. Michael Zorc led the team’s league scoring with 15 goals, while Matthias Sammer became the central figure of a squad packed with players such as Stéphane Chapuisat, Andreas Möller, Jürgen Kohler and Karl-Heinz Riedle.

The shirt also belongs to the step immediately before Dortmund’s biggest European achievement. Many of the players wearing this design would go on to defeat Juventus in the 1997 Champions League final, but the club used a different design in 1996/97.

That distinction actually makes this one more interesting. It comes from the season Dortmund became back-to-back German champions and proved the great team of the 1990s was fully formed, just before Europe learned the same lesson.
