AC Milan came to the Riazor with a 4-1 first-leg lead and no team in Champions League history had ever overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit. Then Valerón scored Deportivo’s second with a rare header as they somehow reached 3-0 before half-time and eventually won 4-0. The holders were eliminated 5-4 on aggregate and Deportivo reached their first-ever Champions League semi-final.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Milan Arrived 4-1 Up. Valerón Helped Send Them Home

Before the second leg against AC Milan, Deportivo were basically being asked to do something that had never been done in the Champions League. They had lost 4-1 in Milan to the reigning European champions, meaning they needed one of the biggest comebacks the competition had ever seen.

Five minutes in, Pandiani gave them hope. Then came Valerón: Alberto Luque crossed from the left, Dida misjudged it and the usually elegant playmaker scored a rare header to make it 2-0. Luque added another before half-time and suddenly Milan’s supposedly safe three-goal advantage was gone.

Fran completed the 4-0 win in the second half, sending Deportivo through 5-4 on aggregate and into the club’s first Champions League semi-final. UEFA recorded it as the first time a team had ever overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit in the competition and Valerón’s No. 21 was right in the middle of the night that made it possible.
