THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Season Deportivo Shocked Europe

In 2003/04, Deportivo La Coruña were playing their fourth Champions League campaign and it turned into the best European run in the club's history.

Their journey was anything but straightforward. They suffered an 8-3 defeat against Monaco in the group stage but still managed to qualify for the knockout rounds. There, they beat Juventus twice, winning 1-0 at home and away to reach the quarter-finals.

Then came AC Milan, the defending European champions. Deportivo lost the first leg 4-1 at San Siro, leaving almost everyone expecting an early exit. But on 7 April 2004, they produced one of the competition's greatest comebacks. Goals from Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valerón, Albert Luque and Fran secured a 4-0 victory at the Riazor and sent Deportivo through 5-4 on aggregate.

Their run finally ended in the semi-finals against José Mourinho's Porto, who went on to win the competition. Deportivo had come incredibly close to reaching their first Champions League final.
