In 2000, Deportivo Alavés came up with an unusual idea for their first UEFA Cup campaign: putting the names of all 13,200 season-ticket holders on their shirts. They chose pink almost by accident, after testing different colours with pieces of card. The team soon became known as the Pink Team and surprised Europe by reaching the UEFA Cup final. They eventually lost 5-4 to Liverpool in one of the competition's most famous matches.

Alavés Printed 13,200 Fans' Names on Their Shirts and Reached a European Final

In September 2000, Deportivo Alavés were preparing for their first European campaign. Instead of wearing a normal shirt, the club decided to thank its supporters by printing the names of all 13,200 season-ticket holders directly into the fabric. Fans could actually find their own names on the shirt, making them part of the team's European adventure.

The pink colour wasn't part of some big marketing plan. According to the club's former general manager, they were testing colours using pieces of card when someone suggested pink. They liked it and kept it. Soon, journalists were calling Alavés the Pink Team and the club was knocking out much bigger opponents, including Inter Milan and Kaiserslautern.

Against all expectations, Alavés reached the UEFA Cup final on 16 May 2001. They faced Liverpool in Dortmund and came back from 3-1 and 4-3 down to force extra time. Unfortunately, an own goal from Delfí Geli gave Liverpool a 5-4 victory under the golden-goal rule. Alavés wore a different blue-and-yellow shirt for the final, but their pink design had accompanied them through an incredible first European campaign.
