For a few weeks in 2000, Córdoba were actually top of Spain’s second division. They travelled to the Vicente Calderón as league leaders to face Atlético Madrid, backed by almost 5,000 travelling supporters and came away with a 1–1 draw. This Umbro and CajaSur home design comes from that period, when Córdoba briefly found themselves looking down at one of Spain’s biggest clubs in the table.

The Shirt From When Córdoba Arrived at Atlético as League Leaders

There was a point in 2000/01 when Córdoba CF were above Atlético Madrid and everyone else in Segunda División.

After returning to the second tier only a year earlier, Córdoba started the campaign strongly enough to lead the league for several matchdays. The moment that really showed how unexpected their run had become came in October 2000.

Córdoba travelled to the Vicente Calderón as league leaders to face an Atlético side desperately trying to return to La Liga. Nearly 5,000 Córdoba supporters made the trip and the crowd was big enough for Atlético to sell out the stadium.

The match finished 1–1, allowing Córdoba to leave Madrid still at the top. They eventually fell back to 12th, but the shirt remained into the following period, when Córdoba added another unexpected run by reaching the 2001/02 Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

The design is pure early-2000s Spanish football: Umbro, thick green-and-white stripes and the huge red CajaSur box dominating the front.

For a club that had spent almost two decades away from Segunda before 1999, this shirt comes from a brief period when Córdoba suddenly looked capable of something much bigger.
