Taffarel Saved Two Penalties to Send Brazil to the 1998 World Cup Final

On 7 July 1998, Brazil faced the Netherlands in the World Cup semi-final. They had arrived in France as defending champions, with Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Bebeto and Roberto Carlos among their biggest names. Ronaldo put Brazil ahead early in the second half, but Patrick Kluivert equalised near the end. After extra time, the score was still 1-1.

Brazil scored all four of their penalties through Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Emerson and captain Dunga. At the other end, Cláudio Taffarel saved Phillip Cocu's attempt before stopping Ronald de Boer's penalty to win the shootout 4-2. Brazil were going to their second World Cup final in a row.

Five days later, Brazil faced hosts France in Paris. They had the chance to become world champions for the fifth time, but two goals from Zinedine Zidane and another from Emmanuel Petit gave France a 3-0 victory. The 1998 World Cup was also Brazil's first wearing Nike, making this yellow-and-green design the start of a partnership that would continue for decades.
