Borussia Dortmund’s 1995/96 title defence ended with a beautifully weird piece of rivalry history. On the penultimate weekend, Dortmund could only draw 2-2 at 1860 Munich, but their hated neighbours Schalke beat Bayern 2-1, which mathematically handed BVB the Bundesliga title with a game still to play. Dortmund finished six points above Bayern, completing back-to-back championships in this Nike era.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Dortmund Won the League Because Schalke Beat Bayern for Them

This shirt comes from the season Dortmund had to defend their first Bundesliga title and the finish produced one of German football’s strangest rivalries-with-benefits moments. BVB went to 1860 Munich on the penultimate matchday and drew 2-2, leaving Bayern with a chance to keep the race alive.

Except Bayern were playing Schalke, Dortmund’s fiercest rivals. Schalke won 2-1, meaning their victory officially made Dortmund champions before BVB had even played the final match of the season. Dortmund’s own retrospective describes the 1995/96 triumph as their successful title defence, their second championship in twelve months.

And this team had serious star power. Matthias Sammer was the defensive leader of the side and was named Germany’s Footballer of the Year for 1995/96; later in 1996 he won the Ballon d’Or, beating Ronaldo by a single point, 144 to 143. So underneath one of Nike’s loudest Dortmund designs sits an even better story: back-to-back champions, crowned partly because Schalke did them the biggest favour imaginable.
