Xabi Alonso went into 2016/17 knowing it would be his final stretch at the top, even if the public didn’t know yet. In March, at 35, he announced that he would retire at the end of the season, explaining that he wanted to stop while he was still playing at the highest level.

He still played a major role. Alonso made 27 Bundesliga appearances and scored three league goals as Bayern finished first with 82 points, 15 ahead of RB Leipzig.

His final match came at the Allianz Arena against Freiburg, where Bayern won 4-1 and Alonso was substituted in the 82nd minute to a huge ovation. That’s what gives this Alonso 14 a bit more meaning than just another Bayern away shirt: it comes from the last season of a career that included a World Cup, two European Championships and two Champions Leagues and he still walked away as a league champion.
