Nico Williams and the End of a 40-Year Wait

The 2023/24 season was a special one for Nico Williams. Playing alongside his older brother Iñaki at Athletic Club, Nico was becoming one of La Liga's most exciting wingers, known for his pace, dribbling and ability to create chances.

But the biggest moment came in the Copa del Rey. Athletic had not lifted the trophy since 1984, despite reaching several finals over the years. Under Ernesto Valverde, they put together an impressive cup run, knocking out Barcelona in a dramatic 4-2 extra-time victory and beating Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals to reach the final against Mallorca.

On 6 April 2024, Nico started the final alongside his brother Iñaki. With Athletic trailing 1-0, he provided the pass for Oihan Sancet to equalise early in the second half. The match eventually went to penalties, where Athletic won 4-2 to end their 40-year wait.

Nico was named Player of the Match, becoming one of the key figures in a victory that meant so much to the club and its supporters. Just a few months later, he continued his incredible year by helping Spain win Euro 2024, scoring in the final against England.
