On 19 March 1996, Roma nearly pulled off an extraordinary UEFA Cup comeback against Slavia Prague. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, they scored three unanswered goals at the Stadio Olimpico, with Francesco Moriero putting them ahead on aggregate in extra time. But a 114th-minute goal from Jiří Vávra sent Slavia through on away goals. It was one of the most painful nights of Carlo Mazzone's final season in charge, watched by nearly 64,000 supporters.

Roma Were 12 Minutes From a European Comeback, Then It All Fell Apart

Roma entered the second leg of their 1995/96 UEFA Cup quarter-final against Slavia Prague needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit. Nearly 64,000 supporters filled the Stadio Olimpico on 19 March 1996, hoping to see Carlo Mazzone's side produce a comeback. For much of the evening, Slavia held firm. 

Francesco Moriero finally broke through in the 60th minute, before captain Giuseppe Giannini scored again in the 82nd. With the tie level on aggregate, the match went to extra time. Moriero struck again in the 99th minute, giving Roma a 3-0 lead on the night and putting them within touching distance of the semi-finals. Then, in the 114th minute, Jiří Vávra scored for Slavia. Roma won 3-1 but were eliminated on away goals. 

The season also marked the end of an era at the club. Carlo Mazzone departed after three years as manager, while longtime captain Giuseppe Giannini played his final season for Roma. Meanwhile, a young Francesco Totti was becoming increasingly important to the first team, even receiving his first senior Italy call-up.
