The Comeback That Should Have Been Impossible

This Lotto top comes from the season Al-Ittihad produced a final comeback that still sounds made up.

They hosted Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in the first leg of the 2004 AFC Champions League final and lost 3–1. With the return match taking place in South Korea, the trophy looked almost completely gone.

Instead, Al-Ittihad won the second leg 5–0, turning a two-goal deficit into a 6–3 aggregate victory. The AFC still describes it as arguably the greatest comeback in Asian club football history and it remains the only time a team has overturned a first-leg deficit to win an AFC Champions League final.

It gave Al-Ittihad their first AFC Champions League title. They then retained it in 2005, becoming the competition’s first (and for years only) back-to-back champions.

That is what makes this early Lotto-era piece worth knowing. It comes from the season Al-Ittihad arrived in South Korea needing a miracle and somehow returned home as champions.
