There is no company name across the front of this Werder shirt, just “SO GEHT BANK HEUTE”, or “That’s how banking works today.” Citibank Germany used the slogan while its old name was being phased out before becoming Targobank in 2010. It makes this an unusual transitional sponsor version of the 2009/10 away kit, from a season when Werder actually had the best away record in the Bundesliga.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt Sponsored by a Sentence

For part of 2009/10, Werder Bremen basically played with an advertising sentence instead of a sponsor name.

The words across this shirt “SO GEHT BANK HEUTE” were Citibank Germany’s new slogan. The reason was a corporate identity problem: the German Citibank business had been sold to French group Crédit Mutuel and the Citibank name was being phased out before the new Targobank brand officially arrived in 2010

So rather than putting either bank name on the shirt, Werder initially carried the slogan.

This is the earlier version of the 2009/10 away shirt. Once Targobank branding was introduced, Werder began using the new name for away matches, DFB-Pokal games and Europa League fixtures, while “SO GEHT BANK HEUTE” remained on most home league shirts.

The away design itself had a pretty fitting season. Werder finished third in the Bundesliga, but if you looked only at matches away from home, they were actually number one: 31 away points, nine wins and 37 goals, a better away record than Bayern, Schalke or anyone else in the league.

The team included Mesut Özil, Claudio Pizarro, Marko Marin, Per Mertesacker and Torsten Frings and also reached a second consecutive DFB-Pokal final.

So the weirdest feature is also the best one: a Werder away shirt from Germany’s best away team, carrying a sponsor that temporarily wasn’t even a company name.
