Most people associate Pablo Aimar at Valencia with No. 21, but his first number was 22 and he wore it for only the final months of 2000/01. Valencia had just broken their transfer record to bring the 21-year-old from River Plate for around €24 million, then threw him straight into a Champions League debut against Manchester United. By the following season he had switched numbers, making Aimar 22 a tiny snapshot of the moment one of Valencia’s most loved players had literally just arrived.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Aimar’s No. 22 Only Lasted Half a Season

This is the Aimar shirt from before everyone knew him as Valencia’s No. 21. Valencia signed the 21-year-old from River Plate in January 2001 for around €24 million (at the time the biggest transfer in the club’s history) and gave him No. 22 for the remainder of the season.

His introduction was almost ridiculously cinematic. Aimar made his Valencia debut on Valentine’s Day against Manchester United in the Champions League and the club later remembered how his dribbling against players such as Roy Keane and Jaap Stam immediately won over Mestalla. Valencia themselves described it as the night Aimar made the stadium “fall in love.”

The No. 22 didn’t last. When 2001/02 began, Aimar moved to the No. 21 that became synonymous with his Valencia career. That leaves this Aimar 22 away shirt tied to a very specific few months: the arrival of Valencia’s record signing, his first European nights with the club and the beginning of a relationship that would eventually make him one of Mestalla’s cult heroes.
