Lynden Gooch’s route to Sunderland was far from normal.

Born in California, he first travelled to Wearside for training visits as a child before moving to England full-time at 16. He worked through Sunderland’s youth teams and stayed long enough to represent the club in the Premier League, Championship and League One.

By 2020/21, Gooch had become Sunderland’s number 11. He made 46 appearances across all competitions that season, scoring five goals and was part of the squad that won the EFL Trophy.

The appeal is the journey behind the name: a player from California who grew up inside Sunderland’s academy and became one of the club’s longest-serving players of the era.
