The 6–1 Win That Still Sent Spain Home

Spain arrived at the 1998 World Cup with a strong squad featuring Raúl, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Morientes and Luis Enrique in No.21, all wearing this Adidas generation of kits. Expectations were high, but the tournament went wrong almost immediately: Spain lost 3-2 to Nigeria and then drew 0-0 with Paraguay.

That left them needing a big result against Bulgaria and help from the other group match. Luis Enrique responded with probably the most complete performance of Spain’s tournament. In the 6-1 win, he scored in the 18th minute, created another goal and won the penalty converted by Hierro. FIFA specifically highlights his influence in that match.

The strange part was that Spain’s six goals changed nothing. Paraguay beat Nigeria 3-1 at the same time, so Spain were eliminated in the group stage despite finishing with a spectacular victory. It remains one of the national team’s more bizarre World Cup exits.
