Bafana Bafana’s Run to the Final Four

This South Africa 2007–09 home shirt is closely connected to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, hosted across the country as preparation for the following year’s World Cup.

Bafana Bafana advanced from their group after drawing with Iraq and defeating New Zealand 2–0, with Bernard Parker scoring both goals. Their run continued to the semi-finals, where they pushed Brazil until Dani Alves scored the only goal from a late free kick.

South Africa then faced European champions Spain in the third-place match. Katlego Mphela scored twice, including a remarkable free kick in stoppage time, before Spain eventually won 3–2 after extra time. Fourth place remains South Africa’s best finish at the Confederations Cup.

Made by Adidas, the shirt features the national team’s traditional yellow and green colours alongside the tournament emblem on the chest. It represents the period when South Africa became the centre of world football and began preparing to host Africa’s first World Cup.
