THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt Inspired by Ángel Labruna’s Tie

At first glance, this looks like River’s famous sash moved onto a black shirt. The real inspiration is much more specific.

The design was created as a tribute to Ángel Labruna, River’s all-time leading scorer and one of the biggest figures in the club’s history. When Labruna later managed River, he became known for wearing a black tie decorated with white and red, the colours Adidas recreated across this shirt.

That is why the sash is not River’s usual solid red. It runs white, red and white across the black body, turning something Labruna wore on the touchline into a full football kit decades later.

The shirt belongs to the 2016–17 season, when Marcelo Gallardo’s River won the Copa Argentina after a wild 4–3 final against Rosario Central.

Most tribute shirts simply add a date or a message inside the collar. This one took a detail almost nobody outside River would recognise and built the whole design around it. Once you know the sash came from Labruna’s tie, the shirt becomes impossible to see as just another black River kit.
