THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Ronaldo Scored Twice in the Match That Won Real Madrid La Liga

In the summer of 2002, Real Madrid signed Ronaldo Nazário from Inter Milan, bringing another superstar into their famous Galácticos team. Ronaldo had just won the World Cup with Brazil, scoring twice in the final against Germany. He joined a Madrid side already featuring Zidane, Figo, Raúl and Roberto Carlos.

His start couldn't have been much better. On 6 October 2002, Ronaldo made his Real Madrid debut against Deportivo Alavés. He came off the bench and scored with his first touch, less than a minute after entering the pitch. He added another goal as Madrid won 5-2.

By the final matchday, Madrid were fighting Real Sociedad for the La Liga title. On 22 June 2003, they faced Athletic Club at the Bernabéu. Ronaldo scored in the 9th minute, Roberto Carlos put Madrid ahead again before half-time and Ronaldo scored his second in the 62nd minute to secure a 3-1 victory. Madrid finished on 78 points, two ahead of Real Sociedad and Ronaldo ended his first season with 23 league goals and a Spanish league title.
