The Shirt From Raúl’s “Aguanís” Goal

On 1 December 1998, Real Madrid faced South American champions Vasco da Gama in Tokyo with the Intercontinental Cup (effectively the world club title of the era) at stake.

Madrid went ahead when a Roberto Carlos cross was headed into his own net by Nasa, but Juninho equalised after half-time. With the score still 1-1 in the 83rd minute, Raúl produced the moment that came to define this shirt’s season.

He controlled the ball inside the area, fooled two Vasco defenders with his movement, left them on the ground and calmly scored the winner. The goal became known as the “Aguanís” and Real Madrid’s own history still describes it as one of Raúl’s defining moments. Madrid won 2-1 and lifted their second Intercontinental Cup.

His season did not stop there. Raúl scored 25 La Liga goals, finishing one ahead of Rivaldo to win his first Pichichi Trophy.
